Encouragement to council candidates

Quim Gil
Hi, being a Nokia guy I would find rude or weird to propose specific names of potential council candidates but I thought it would be useful to stress the importance specifically of the next elected Maemo Community Council.

The council is seen by Nokia and the people pushing the MeeGo project as a very interesting asset and characteristic of the Maemo community. It can't be translated directly to the MeeGo context but everybody agrees that having an elected body canalizing an agenda complementing the strategy and work of the MeeGo technical infrastructure would be useful and worth trying.

The existance of a MeeGo community council and all the details and weight of such team will heavily depend on the strength and maturity of the next council. That stength and maturity begins with a good representation of candidates and a wide participation. If we don't reach these initial levels then it will be much difficult to define strong and mature next steps towards MeeGo.

So please, if you are thinking of running for election or nominagting someone please go ahead. Individual shyness can be really expensive in community terms these days.  :)

Just to recap the state of play at the moment:

Candidates proposed:

* Randall Arnold
* Andrea Grandi

Candidates nominated, but no word from the candidate yet:

* sjgadsby
* lcuk (Gary Birkett)
* Attilla77

Candidates nominated, nomination declined:
* Valerio Valerio
* qwerty12

Others who have expressed potential interest but haven't committed yet:
Jaffa.

Have I missed anyone?

Cheers,
Dave.

Yes! I missed our resident Irish Texas Hold'em specialist.

As a reminder: you have until Tuesday evening, 23:59 UTC, to nominate
yourself.

Cheers,

I've a question: are we going to have two separate councils (Maemo and
Moblin) only for this transitional period or we'll always have?
Shouldn't we have a single MeeGo council? That's just a question eh..
not a proposal :)

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, but I imagine that what will happen is
that when a council for MeeGo is proposed (which it will be, by someone)
that we will go through the same heart-wrenching debate about who gets
to vote again, have an election, and the MeeGo council will supercede
the Maemo Council. At least, that's what I'd expect.

It'll be interesting to see if any Nokia or Intel developers run for the
MeeGo council (remember there's nothing stopping a Nokia developer who
wants to make the council better from running for the council either).

Cheers,
Dave.

Of course, as representatives of the Maemo community, the incoming
Maemo Community Council will be instrumental in deciding on if, when
and how such a transition occurred.

Indeed. With only 3 candidates so far, my reading of the rules is that
there won't even *be* an election; they'll just get the job:

    http://wiki.maemo.org/Community_Council/Election_process

Could've been worse - with only 2 candidates, there wouldn't even be a council.

Cheers,

Andrew

actually we have: Nokia --> Quim Gil --> Council (5 Maemo members)

I would expect now: (Nokia + Intel) --> Community Leader (Quim? he
would be fine :) ) ---> MeeGo Council (2-3 people from Maemo + 2-3
people from Moblin). In this way we would be sure that both
communities have a strenght representation in the Council. Of course
it would be fine too, if in those 2-3 people we would have 1
@nokia.com and 1 @intel.com....

I hope we will have more candidatures in these remaining days, I don't
want to win just because there were no other people, I want the
Community to select the best 5 people for this "job".

As difficult as it is to get Nokia to act as a coherent mind, it will be
more than twice as difficult with Nokia + Intel. I would not expect
there to be an easy way to have the same efficiency we have now with
MeeGo - to my mind, the technical steering committee will probably have
a related community steering committee & (if we can avoid excessive
bureaucracy all round) that would be the logical landing spot for
Council queries & interactions.

The community steering committee would consist of the MeeGo council +
Dawn & Quim, and perhaps us staff, and would meet regularly among
themselves, and also with the technical steering committee.

I don't think it makes sense to put "Maemo" or "moblin" stickers on
seats in the MeeGo council - much better to work ASAP on building a
MeeGo identity, and getting to know the most active people on both sides.

Of course, for the moment this is all hypothetical seed-planting.

Cheers,
Dave.

Why have there been no maemo.org Blog announcements about this? Or, have
I missed something?

Honestly, the lack of maemo.org blog posts from the current Council has
been a little disappointing. I know that some Council members use their
own blogs (which is fine), but I've really been missing "official" news
via maemo.org this term. Just imo, of course.

Sorry for top posting,

Come on guys, this is the Maemo community council election and Maemo community. We have enough speculation on the MeeGo lists about MeeGo.

As is obvious the next Maemo council will be in a very exciting and interesting position. The challenges are different than for the previous councils, but that has always been the case for the new council. Certainly MeeGo has changed the dynamics, and the Community needs to figure out how things go from here.
If that isn't a good challenge, then nothing is.

I agree and am embarrassed for my own part in that.  I do prefer using my own blog and was hoping to have that piped to the council blog page the way we do Planet-- in the flurry of other activities it just never happened.

Maybe. The former Councils never shied away from making announcements,
though. It is, imho, part of the job. And, honestly, p.m.o is much more
visible to maemo/MeeGo community members than this list or Twitter.

No one may care, but I would have put myself in for election if I had
the capacity. But, this is a strange time for my family and me. The next
term may be much more promising, as some things are brewing. For now,
I'll have to continue being a regular ol' community supporter. ;)
